Your Roofing Options

Hibu Websites • Jan 15, 2020
The wonderful thing about us as humans is that every one of us has a different taste in style. Whether it is ice cream or roofing options we all like something different. I think it is because of this that there are many different roofing options available to suit the style of every individual. With all these options it is important to understand what the pros and cons of each roofing option are. By better understanding the roofing options it is easier to tell the roofing contractor exactly what you want and avoid miscommunication.

Below are four different roofing options explained.

Clay or Cement Tile Roofs
Due to the strength and durability of this roof, it is found all over the country. Terracotta clay is usually used to make traditional tiles, but there are also roofs made from ceramic and concrete tiles. This roofing style consists of roofing tiles that are installed to overlap each other all across the roofing surface. All the tiles have roughly the same durability and strength and this ensures that this type of roof can be the only roof you will ever have to install. One of the greatest advantages of this roofing structure is the fact that if tiles get damaged through rough weather, instead of replacing the whole roof you only need to replace the broken tiles.

Slate Roofing
Slate is seen as a stone roof, but rather than being made from concrete and clay these slate roofs are made from rock mined from a quarry. It is easy to split slate into flat slabs that make it an ideal stone to use for the roof covering. It is one of the most expensive materials you can use for roofing and it must be installed by a trained professional. There is a good reason for it being so expensive and that is that it is one of the most, if not the most, durable material you can use for the roof covering.

Built-Up Roofing
This roofing type is normally used on flat or slightly pitched roofs. These roofs are very popular because they are inexpensive and fire-resistant. Built-Up Roofing (BUR) is created by layering the roof with alternating layers of waterproof materials as fiberglass and roofing felt. This is then sealed with hot tar, bitumen, to keep it all together. This can be a very messy process when installing the roof and the tar can be smelly when it is used.

Wood Shingle Roof
A wood shingle roof is made by cutting thin wedge-shaped pieces of wood from logs. This roofing option has come under investigation and has seen legal restrictions being imposed against wood roofing in areas that are prone to seasonal wildfires. This is a very attractive roofing option but is hard to install and not very suitable for a DIY job.
